OK. Let’s take a breath. I know I’m not the only one who feels like the world is a lot right now. Bombs are being dropped on innocent civilians again after they had a breath to begin rebuilding their lives from the debris. The most vulnerable in society are at risk of being forced (further) into poverty because of terrifying cuts. A tangerine man is president. The change we might have hoped for for this country seems to be a long way from where we thought we’d be. Young boys and men are being radicalised by a former Big Brother contestant. 2025 is, let’s face it, a bit of a shit show. If we’re honest, it feels like it’s been a shit show since long before the New Year rolled around.
And we’re tired. I resist opening the news because I know that what I see will be dark and heavy, but I want to look because I know I shouldn’t get to look away. I need to see what’s happening, I need to know and understand so that I can do everything in my power to change it. If people’s rights are being stripped away from them, I need to know so I can call for change. Because if we only protect our own rights, we’ll loose them too. I want to be as knowledgeable as possible about what’s going on in the world but it comes at a cost. And then I go on social media to talk about work stuff, encouraging people to show up as themselves when the world feels like it could implode any minute. It feels like it’s mad to even be centring ourselves in any kind of discussions at the moment when we want to scream about the injustices of the world. Here’s the thing. I really believe that showing up authentically, with confidence and clarity, wherever we need to, allows us to be better advocates for change. But with so much wrong, how do we keep showing up for what’s right?
Letting go of perfection
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s the cost of not being true to myself. Anyone who knows me knows I’m basically tired all the time, but when I was living a life that wasn’t aligned with myself and my values, I was really exhausted. I was sad and scared and I knew that something wasn't right but I couldn't put my finger on what or why. I look at the person I was in early 2015 and I can see how broken I was. How disconnected. How my confidence and resilience were both pretty non existent. I was spending my energy on trying to be what I thought I needed to be - polished, professional, always ‘on.’ I was so worn out by being the version of myself I thought I should be, I couldn’t give myself the time or space to figure out what mattered to me, or give any attention to it. By not being true to myself, I was wasting precious energy that I could have been using for meaningful action.
Since 2015, I’ve stopped doing a lot of things (mainly because my energy has become such a precious resource). I’ve stopped pretending, over-explaining and performing (wish I could say overanalysing but let’s face it, that’ll probs never happen) and I’ve reclaimed precious emotional and mental bandwidth. I’ve aligned my work, relationships, my advocacy with who I truly am, not who I think I should be. And because I’m not wasting precious energy on being something other than me, I have the space to do just that. Authenticity doesn’t mean doing it all - it means choosing what really matters.
What does this look like in action?
Know what ‘Enough’ – You don’t have to fight every battle. Pick the ones that truly matter to you. Stand against the things that are at odds with your values. Using your voice and your privilege (and recognising the power and impact of both) to advocate for change you can influence is much better than trying to be all things to all men and achieving nothing.
Drop the performance – Show up as you are, even if it’s imperfect. We can all get things ‘wrong’, especially when we really care. But showing up messily, imperfectly, is better than not showing up at all. Change happens when we are able to make noise about what really matters to us. When we stop performing, we can see what that really is.
Rest as resistance – Taking care of yourself is a radical act when the world expects you to run on empty. Changemakers need to prioritise themselves alongside their advocacy. Because we cannot be there for others if we are not there for ourselves.
Use your voice where it counts – Speak up about what matters without fear of not being ‘expert’ enough. You have an opinion. You know what feels wrong and right to you. And it’s OK to talk about those things. It’s OK to recognise that we live in a world where we don’t all agree all the time, but we can use our voices where it counts to make real change.
The world is heavy, but we are not powerless.
We make the most impact when we show up fully as ourselves, when we’re focused and intentional.
The world needs people like you to stand up for what you believe in so that change can happen. But to do that, you need to really know who you are and what you stand for. Where are you spending energy performing instead of putting yourself into what truly matters?
This is why Authenticity Unlocked isn’t just a concept - it’s a necessity. It’s about reclaiming our energy, our voices and our focus so that we can put them toward what truly matters. It’s about recognising that showing up as ourselves isn’t self-indulgent- it’s an act of resistance in a world that would rather we stay small, exhausted and silent.
When we stop performing and start living in alignment with who we really are, we unlock the energy and clarity we need to fight for what’s right. We protect our ability to keep going, to stay engaged and to make real change.
So, I’ll leave you with this: What would it mean for you to unlock your authenticity, to stop spending energy on what drains you and start pouring it into what fuels you? What would it look like to show up for what truly matters, as your fullest, most powerful self?
